<strong>{1} My First Stitch Fix - </strong>I was SO excited to get my first fix this week! It was so much fun to open that box full of surprises! Click <a href="http://heelsandhoneysuckles.blogspot.com/2013/08/stitch-fix-1.html" target="_blank">here</a> to see what was in my box.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<strong>{2} Waiting Game</strong> - Ty and I are building a house...or I should say trying to build a house. Miss impatient here didn't realize what a long, drawn out process it was. Right now we are waiting for our construction loan to be approved by the bank. I keep telling myself that one of these days I will have a house! In the meantime, I am spending an unhealthy amount of time on houzz.com.<br />
<br />
<strong>{3} Math Joke</strong> - I really do love my sister. I also really love picking on her about her math skills. I got the math genes, and she didn't. Bless her heart! She did, however, get all of the creative genes. I am very jealous of that! I found this ecard on Pinterest yestrerday and it just screamed "Magen"! <br />
<br />

<br />
<strong>{4} Fig Preserves - </strong>My Ninny loves me! She gave me a jar of her homemade fig preserves on Sunday. They are my favorite! I am ashamed to admit that I could probably eat the whole jar in one sitting. But I won't! You definitely have to be a southerner to understand my affection for them. <br />

It was like Christmas! A box full of presents just for me! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmtkVa-V2UF7CaL0RmIfIIiZ6Q5ReCVt6Dzp_bGS9lbHVfcdLLAEeFScDW0FdNPwtcCP2JTLlhkT12m4qPPT50ByJmkelmYeYjOXIKKQ9I4JRftrj4eZNIUX4AIxgKjVJf64FBk6CsV2k/s1600/photo+5-1+-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmtkVa-V2UF7CaL0RmIfIIiZ6Q5ReCVt6Dzp_bGS9lbHVfcdLLAEeFScDW0FdNPwtcCP2JTLlhkT12m4qPPT50ByJmkelmYeYjOXIKKQ9I4JRftrj4eZNIUX4AIxgKjVJf64FBk6CsV2k/s400/photo+5-1+-1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
For those of you wondering 'what in the world is Stich Fix?', here are the details:<br />
<ul>
<li>Stitch Fix is basically an online styling service that sends you items based on your style profile (Awesome right!) </li>
<li>You pay a $20 styling fee that can be applied to your items if you choose to purchase any of them.</li>
<li>You get a 25% discount if you decide to keep all 5 items in your box.</li>
<li>You have 3 days to decide what you want to keep, and you return the items you don't want in a prepaid bag. Stitch Fix only charges your credit card for the items you want to keep.</li>
<li>Stitch Fix has a great referral program that gives you a $25 credit for everyone that signs up using your referral link. </li>
</ul>
Want to try it out??? Just click this link to take you to <a href="http://stitchfix.com/sign_up?referrer_id=3150619" target="_blank">stitchfix.com</a>.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, when I opened my first box, I was a little disappointed. I kinda expected that after reading other reviews. They say that each box gets better because you review the items you receive online, and the stylists get a better idea of what you like and don't like.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here is what I received in my box and my thoughts on each item:</div>
<br />
<div align="center">
<h3>
<strong>#1 - Pink Martini Mia Bird Print Front Pocket Tank {$48}</strong> </h3>
</div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilfdZ3bI46kFcsHJwXgKOyQp5hQraE93U1BeqqUBDUFKTJkPqXZaPgHiZTsfzWuqPQagda_nDbgRfEks0qGWFODgoQeRxpybeabJfGNvd3uUkt_vpd3P8hYR-1tx95y1z3va1tbL4QGf4/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilfdZ3bI46kFcsHJwXgKOyQp5hQraE93U1BeqqUBDUFKTJkPqXZaPgHiZTsfzWuqPQagda_nDbgRfEks0qGWFODgoQeRxpybeabJfGNvd3uUkt_vpd3P8hYR-1tx95y1z3va1tbL4QGf4/s400/photo+1.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
I liked the overall idea of this shirt...but I just don't do birds (see the <a href="http://heelsandhoneysuckles.blogspot.com/p/about.html" target="_blank">Meet Jessica</a> page for explanation). Also, I think $48 is a little expensive for a tank like this. Verdict: Not a keeper<br />
<br /></div>
<div align="center">
<h3>
<strong>#2 - Kensie Johnny Skinny Jeans {$88}</strong></h3>
</div>
<div align="center">

<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
I LOVED these jeans! They have just the right amount of stretch in them to make them fit perfectly. I think they will look great with boots this fall. They are a little pricey, but worth it! Verdict: Keeper!</div>
<div align="center">

<div align="center">

<div align="center">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
No...just no. This was definitely not my style at all. It was also very poor quality. You could see straight through it when I tried it on. Verdict: Sending it back for sure!</div>
<div align="center">

<div align="center">
<br />
This shirt is cute but boring. It fit well…but I have enough boring stuff in my closet already. Another turn off was that is was made of this really thick material, almost sweater like. You can't wear that in South Alabama in the summer! Verdict: Not a keeper</div>
<div align="center">
</div>
<div align="center">
<h3>
<strong><br /></strong></h3>
<h3>
<strong>#5 - Art Deco Necklace {42}</strong></h3>

<div align="center">
<br />
I just didn't like this necklace at all. That's really all I have to say about that! Verdict: Going back<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Side Note: Stitch Fix also sends these neat styling cards to show you what to wear with the item you received. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrp4CLdJGDG8XnO41r_nNWwM6zRhrQ3RkhzdiTmu_dkaDH2X4GMPKA9-dgxF_D3rSItCMgiqAs9swOWKEDCuEnK3AvRnKrmuZWPKtFJYd4yUW4GgPaBBZe5gAQzzD-JKpfI-BnG8bl_vM/s1600/photo+2-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrp4CLdJGDG8XnO41r_nNWwM6zRhrQ3RkhzdiTmu_dkaDH2X4GMPKA9-dgxF_D3rSItCMgiqAs9swOWKEDCuEnK3AvRnKrmuZWPKtFJYd4yUW4GgPaBBZe5gAQzzD-JKpfI-BnG8bl_vM/s400/photo+2-1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Even though I didn't really love everything in my box, it was really fun! The idea of a stylist actually picking out clothes for me was really exciting. I'm definitely going to give it another try. Hopefully, my next box will be better!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My mom also signed up! Check back for a post on her box soon.</div>

{1} S<strong>caredy Cat</strong> - Ty has been out of town all week, and I am absolutely terrified when I am home alone at night! He has been traveling a lot lately for work, and I was becoming a little braver. Then, we had some pretty rough weather Tuesday night, and if you have read my <a href="http://heelsandhoneysuckles.blogspot.com/2011/08/i-will-praise-you-in-this-storm.html" target="_blank">I Will Praise You In This Storm</a> post then you know that I don't have the best track record with storms. So, I was just a little scared! This ecard pretty much sums up my thoughts on being home alone.<br />

{3} <strong>Dawson's Creek</strong> - This week I discovered that all 6 seasons of Dawson's Creek are on Netflix! So, of course I had a little marathon. There's nothing like some high school drama and Savage Garden music to pass the time! What can I say? I'm a child of the '90s. <br />
<br />
{4} <strong>Popsicles - </strong>My air conditioner at my house stopped working yesterday. In August. In South Alabama. That is not ok! What do I do when it is 85 degrees in my house? Eat popsicles! <br />

Tomorrow I am helping my sister move back to Tuscaloosa for the fall semester. In honor of getting to visit my favorite city, I am going to share with you my top 5 restaurants in Tuscaloosa. It was extremely difficult for me to narrow the list to just 5. I lived in Tuscaloosa for 4 years and fell in love with so many restaurants. There are days when all I want to eat is a sandwich from Newk's or sushi from Bento. So after much deliberation, here is my list of the 5 best restaurants in Tuscaloosa and my favorite items on the menu.<br />
<center>
</center>
<div align="left">
1. <strong>Newk's - </strong>A deli that serves sandwiches, soups, salads and pizza. I always order either the Five Cheese Pizza (it has a pesto base!) or the Club Sandwich. Both are excellent!</div>
<div align="left">

2. <strong>Bento </strong>- Japanese restaurant on the Strip (University Boulevard). I love their Teriyaki Chicken Bento Box and Shrimp Tempura Roll (I'm not very adventurous when it comes to sushi).<br />
<br />

<br />
3. <strong>Iguana Grill</strong> - Best Mexican restaurant ever! (In my humble opinion) I order the enchiladas everytime.<br />
<br />
4. <strong>Mugshots - </strong>Amazing burgers! The Pat-O is the way to go. Lots of melty cheese!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<strong></strong><br />
5. <strong>Cypress Inn - </strong>A nicer restaurant on Black Warrior River with great food and beautiful views. All of their food is yummy. I usually get the grilled chicken.<br />

Like the rest of my generation, I am completely addicted to my iPhone. I NEVER leave home without it. So, today I am linking up with <a href="http://www.alabamawomenbloggers.com/" target="_blank">Alabama Women Bloggers</a> to share some of my favorite apps.</div>

It also allows you to create budgets and shows you how well you are following it.</div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

7. <strong>Stylish Girl</strong> - This is really cool closet organization app. You can take pictures of the items in your closet and create outfits. You can also use the calender feature to plan when you are going to wear the outfits (which appeals to my Type A-must plan everything-personality). <br />

Ty and I made the 5 hour trek up there a couple of weekends ago, and we had a blast! <br />
<br />
If you are on a budget like we were, then I highly recommend staying farther away from downtown and paying to park in one of the parking decks close to Broadway Street. Sure it's nice to be able to walk to the bars from your hotel, but we weren't willing to pay $350/night. We decided to stay at a Home2 Suites by Hilton close to Vanderbilt (Ty's Hilton Honors point are definitely coming in handy). It was really nice for a reasonably priced hotel, and I would definitely stay there again. <br />
<br />
Here is how we spent our time in my new favorite city:<br />
<br />
Friday - We didn't get to Nashville until about 11:00 that night, so we didn't get to do anything fun :(<br />
<br />
Saturday - We headed out to Fontanel to tour the Southern Living Idea House. It was absolutely beautiful! I am planning on doing a post on it soon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/l520/JessicaFoley07/IdeaHouse-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="255" src="http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/l520/JessicaFoley07/IdeaHouse-1.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next we stopped for lunch at the Pancake Pantry. I cannot even begin to describe how amazing their pancakes are. Don't be alarmed if there is a line down the street. It moves pretty quickly, and I can assure you the food is worth the wait. Ty had the Silver Dollar pancakes (boring), and I decided to go with a lighter option, the Swiss Chocolate Chip pancakes. Ok....so maybe they weren't the healthiest item on the menu, but they were the most chocolatey. That's a valid argument, right? ;) I am just devastated that I didn't take a picture of them. I must return for a photo!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/l520/JessicaFoley07/PancakePantry-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/l520/JessicaFoley07/PancakePantry-1.png" width="356" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, we headed to Bridgestone Arena for the Cirque du Soleil show Quidam. This was the first Cirque du Soleil performance that I had ever seen, and I really enjoyed it! My favorite acts were the man in the giant wheel (I'm sure the act has a better name) and the aerial contortionist on silks (pictured below). I think Ty was pretty skeptical, but he enjoyed it too. We weren't allowed to take pictures during the performance, so I had to borrow one from Cirque du Soleil's website. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We ate dinner at Merchant's on Broadway Street. This was my second time here, and it was fabulous! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If you are ever at Merchant's, be sure to try a Tennessee Mojito. It is amazing! I believe it's the best drink I've ever had. I love a mojito, but it's the mango and peach rum that really make this one special!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We spent the rest of the hanging out on Broadway. We spent a lot of our time at Big Bang Piano Bar. I love piano bars, and this one was great! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Sunday - We had to make the long drive home. We did stop in Franklin, TN for a delicious brunch at Puckett's Grocery & Restaurant. Franklin is the cutest little town. We saw some really cute store fronts downtown while passing through. I would love to go back and explore.<br />

We had a great trip! As I already mentioned, I LOVE Nashville! I am already eager to go back. Next time I want to stop in Lynchburg and tour the Jack Daniels distillery. I also think it would be neat to see the Parthenon replica. Who knows when I'll be going to Greece to see the real thing?!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00701137669544774357noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8242683660946964457.post-55766173722193672492013-07-12T15:02:00.001-05:002013-07-12T15:28:56.002-05:00Playing Catch UpI'm back! My little sister, Magen, turns 18 tomorrow. Where did the time go? It seems like just yesterday we were bringing that funny smelling baby home from the hospital. I was 4 1/2 when she was born, and I remember wanting a little sister so bad…and then I got one. She was great until she learned to talk. Then I was ready to give her back! ;)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyOjQGd9GvLuYilDidiabJSgQcHs6auD-6ibpU0IG_EcMcDxBdmfAZqhK5Fw-E55oStrtb3dM4nC9uhM0JBDstpDAfqStVvwvljo1R8BSpJuVxVpIIQVqDkm8Ds1xU8GiZhyv2jEnlP5k/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyOjQGd9GvLuYilDidiabJSgQcHs6auD-6ibpU0IG_EcMcDxBdmfAZqhK5Fw-E55oStrtb3dM4nC9uhM0JBDstpDAfqStVvwvljo1R8BSpJuVxVpIIQVqDkm8Ds1xU8GiZhyv2jEnlP5k/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Like normal sisters, we fought way more than we got along. She will tell you that I tortured her growing up…but it was all in good fun. Sure, I dressed her up in baby doll clothes and bossed her around. But, isn't that what little sisters are for? Haha! But, at the end of the day, I am really glad to have her as a sister. Who else would I share inside jokes about our family with? <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuwzXzNIz4MSwswyQTT4bpl_eCdrQnUAxu4tttoST-PgRX2WlKEO_IBF-Zv5ygKKJ82egBdSmyNnRYH-pTqLToUM62Ponldj_d8mDPZHC5rzUyNuR8cXYBe2_7Q1JzcrdsWlT8zYjLgQY/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuwzXzNIz4MSwswyQTT4bpl_eCdrQnUAxu4tttoST-PgRX2WlKEO_IBF-Zv5ygKKJ82egBdSmyNnRYH-pTqLToUM62Ponldj_d8mDPZHC5rzUyNuR8cXYBe2_7Q1JzcrdsWlT8zYjLgQY/s320/5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Random fact about Magen: She couldn't say the letter F when she was little, so she called herself May May Totey. I still like to call her that from time to time. Haha!<br />
<br />
Magen is smart, creative, and one of the kindest people on the planet. Not to mention she looks like a freaking Barbie doll…tall, skinny, blonde hair, green eyes (see picture below). Why am I buttering her up??? Well, for the record it is all true, but I may or may not be trying to keep her from killing me after this next part. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBPud3Rnco_QEBEqQfDxYadgtCniJ7PTFWA0fDp-e-OIQ_T5_bjEyQM9Mel8KpEm4STDQ8liTm2jxt20Mmw4vWSp1tuuIa7pgoLRjAo0w4c9BcANiAwJalv2qBWu5ReB9HUn9lZwYkxjI/s1600/303013_166215696803685_100002457686845_312131_419233333_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBPud3Rnco_QEBEqQfDxYadgtCniJ7PTFWA0fDp-e-OIQ_T5_bjEyQM9Mel8KpEm4STDQ8liTm2jxt20Mmw4vWSp1tuuIa7pgoLRjAo0w4c9BcANiAwJalv2qBWu5ReB9HUn9lZwYkxjI/s320/303013_166215696803685_100002457686845_312131_419233333_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I already told you that she has blonde hair, but what I meant is that she is a blonde through and through. She says things all the time that make everyone stop and say, "What?" So, I decided to start keeping track of all of her moments of brilliance. Every time she says something funny, I pull out my iPhone and add it to the list. I think it is selfish of me to keep all of these awesome quotes to myself. So, when Magen reads this and tries to kill me, just remember…I did this for you. <br />
<br />
I do want everyone to know that I have been waiting a long time to post this. I knew better than to post it while I still lived with my sister. It would not have been safe with her sleeping in the next room.<br />
<br />
I hope these brighten your day a little. <br />
<br />
<br />
Me: Magen, do you want me to paint your nails this pretty blue color?<br />
Magen: No, I'm very reserved.<br />
Me: That's not right…<br />
<br />
<br />
Magen: What's a Lutherian church?<br />
Me: I think you mean Lutheran.<br />
<br />
<br />
Magen: Is definite a word?<br />
Me: Uh, yeah.<br />
<br />
<br />
Magen: You know that channel, you know the God channel. They don't play commercials.<br />
<br />
<br />
Magen: Do left handed people still wear their wedding ring on their left hand?<br />
<br />
<br />
Magen: Those girls with those cute boys aren't very pretty, it must be a Sunday School group.<br />
<br />
<br />
Magen: That song "Made in America" is kinda prejudiced. You know mexicans that come over here aren't made in America.<br />
Me: What?<br />
<br />
<br />
(Excuse the language on this one)<br />
Magen: Why do people have those pricks in their hair?<br />
Me: Hahahahahahah….I think you mean picks!<br />
<br />
<br />
Me: What yard line were y'all sitting on?<br />
Magen: We were sitting in the upper deck…not on the yard line.<br />
<br />
<br />
Me: Tell mom to stop fraternizing with the enemy.<br />
Magen: What? No, she wasn't doing that. She was just talking to them.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
(On our way to see our great Uncle in the hospital)<br />
Magen: When are visiting hours over?<br />
Mom: I don't know, but I'm sure they will let us see him.<br />
Magen: We will just pretend like we are family.<br />
Mom: Magen, we are family...<br />
<br />
<br />
Magen: If I'm typing "It's so nice to meet you", is so spelled with one O or two? I always get them confused.<br />
Mom: So is never spelled with two O's.<br />
Magen: Yes it it. It's just like to and too. Give me an example of when it has one O and when it has two.<br />
Mom: I promise, so is never spelled with two O's.<br />
<br />
<br />
Sorry, for poking a little fun at you, Magen. You are just too funny. Hope you have a fabulous 18th Birthday!<br />

Unfortunately, my blog posts are going to be few and far between from now on. I don't have "quite" as much free time with my new schedule as I used to. <br />
<br />
So what's new with me? Oh, I don't know...I just started my first real job, moved to Enterprise, and started some online classes. Between working 40 hours a week, unpacking, doing homework, and going to Tuscaloosa every home game weekend, my life has been a little crazy. <br />
<br />
I'm pretty excited to be in my new apartment. A 2 minute commute to work is so much better than 30 minutes. I guess that won't really matter in a couple of weeks, since I will be on the road half of the time. Oh well, it's just nice to have a place of my own. It's comforting to know that when I get home everything is exactly where I left it. There's not a crazy lady (cough cough Mom) running around hiding my stuff.<br />
<br />
Just when I thought I was done with school, here I am taking more classes so that I can sit for the CPA exam. Luckily, I only need 4 more accounting class, so I don't have to actually get my Master's. Oh, did I mention these classes I'm taking are through LSU. Just to make it perfectly clear, I bleed crimson and white. I will NEVER yell Geaux Tigers…my friends from Louisiana seem to believe otherwise. At least they are all online, and I never have to even step on campus.<br />
<br />
Speaking of football (you know it's my favorite topic this time of year), I'm pretty excited about this weekend. The Tennessee game is my favorite. I know that Tennessee isn't very good this year, and it won't be as good of a game as the LSU game. But, there is nothing like 101,821 people with a common hatred of Tennessee singing: "Rocky Top you'll never be home sweet home to me!" (I won't finish the song since it has some ugly words in it) :)<br />
<br />
Roll Tide!<br />

I'm not sure if it will ever be the same without Michael Scott, but I am trying to be optimistic. As long and Jim and Dwight on there, I will keep watching. To celebrate the new season, I've put together a list of my top 10 favorite moments from "The Office". I hope you enjoy! :)<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Top 10 "The Office" Moments</b></span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b></b></span>10. <b>Michael's Flaws</b><br />
<b><br /></b><br />
<b>Michael Scott: </b>Guess what? I have flaws. What are they? Oh I dunno, I sing in the shower? Sometimes I spend too much time volunteering. Occasionally I'll hit somebody with my car. So sue me-no, don't sue me. That is opposite the point I'm trying to make.<br />
<b><br /></b><br />
This is one of my favorite Michael Scott quotes. My mom was asking me some questions to help prepare me for a job interview a few months ago. Every time she asked me "What do you consider to be your biggest flaws?", my mind would go blank, and I would respond "I sing in the shower, spend too much time volunteering, and sometimes hit somebody with my car." Haha…I was terrified that I would accidentally say this in the real interview.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="font-size: x-small; margin-top: 0; text-align: left; width: 384px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">9. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><b>Michael's Last Dundies</b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><b><br /></b></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/3vPzdY7ZqHU?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><b><br /></b></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><b><span id="goog_1834770942"></span><span id="goog_1834770943"></span></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This almost made me cry the first time it aired. Definitely a great moment.</div>
<br />
8. <b>"Dwight, You Ignorant Slut"</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Zv9rZdjv4Mo?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Haha! Another great Michael Scott quote. Probably my sister's least favorite…I like to yell "Magen, you ignorant slut!" at her from time to time just for kicks and giggles. She doesn't find it nearly as amusing as I do.</div>
<br />
7. <b>"Computers Are About Murdering You In A Lake"</b><br />
<b><br /></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/BIakZtDmMgo?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<b><br /></b><br />
I'm not sure what's funnier…Michael actually driving his car into a lake, Dwight trying to save him, or Michael's comments on computers trying to murder people in lakes.<br />
<br />
6. <b>Jim & Pam's First Kiss</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4hJ18_EdzRx00uzefyCl7CMjJeCDsQJuRBWnERvz6EmGXYw_oSd6pDRMUJU_akOH_L1P5Tgf8DncVArNq67QL2rwm1jrhUc2dZQtEMr5vGHJSmaddOaQLIzG67w7lIOh4rrKtOE1aU9I/s400/Casino-Night-Jim-Pam_l.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4hJ18_EdzRx00uzefyCl7CMjJeCDsQJuRBWnERvz6EmGXYw_oSd6pDRMUJU_akOH_L1P5Tgf8DncVArNq67QL2rwm1jrhUc2dZQtEMr5vGHJSmaddOaQLIzG67w7lIOh4rrKtOE1aU9I/s320/Casino-Night-Jim-Pam_l.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The moment we had all been waiting forever for! Jim finally told Pam he loved her. Of course, she rejected him…but it all worked out in the end.</div>
<br />
5. <b>Jim Slaps Dwight</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/poDLjwSmaW0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

2. <b>Double Jeopardy </b><br />
<b><br /></b><br />
My absolute favorite Michael Scott quote! I couldn't find a good video for this one…sorry :(<br />
<br />
<b>Michael Scott: </b>So, I need a little treat for the gang. Something to win their affections back.<br />
<br />
<b>Ryan: </b>Back? Why is that, Michael?<br />
<br />
<b>Michael Scott: </b>Well, I ran down Meredith in my car.<br />
<br />
<b>Ryan: </b>Ohhhh. Did you do this on purpose?<br />
<br />
<b>Michael Scott: </b>No. I was being negligent.<br />
<br />
<b>Ryan: </b>Did this happen on company property?<br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b><br /></b></span></b><br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b>Michael Scott: </b>It was on company property, with company property. So, double jeopardy, we're fine.</span></b><br />
<br />
<b>Ryan: </b>I don't think - I don't think you understand how jeopardy works.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: auto;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><b>Michael Scott: </b>Oh, I'm sorry. What is, 'we're fine'?</span></b><br />

Ahhh…so sweet! My favorite part is actually not in this video. Right after they are married Jim tells the camera crew: "I bought the boat tickets the day I saw that YouTube video. I knew we'd need a backup plan. The boat was actually plan C. The church was plan B. And plan A was marrying her a long, long time ago. Pretty much the day I met her."<br />

So, here is a tutorial. I'm not going to lie, these are a headache to make, but definitely worth it.<br />
<br />
<b>Supplies:</b><br />
canvas (I used 18" x 24")<br />
2 cans of spray paint (different colors)<br />
contact paper<br />
scissors<br />
painter's tape<br />
old newspapers or sheet (to paint on)<br />
ruler<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij3Nmd3c_1hbpPwfVhXtAqjSoBg1J0SxDSB2D3YfaAYxt1x-T5EhMpdNEM-ixPH0ieFWW4QzRExwevFEhM2nJV_4U0s8O1wigjmOlcwK1mYIIw9REhVNL9oJcSf0cKxYXtwVdG7s54LMA/s1600/photo-7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij3Nmd3c_1hbpPwfVhXtAqjSoBg1J0SxDSB2D3YfaAYxt1x-T5EhMpdNEM-ixPH0ieFWW4QzRExwevFEhM2nJV_4U0s8O1wigjmOlcwK1mYIIw9REhVNL9oJcSf0cKxYXtwVdG7s54LMA/s320/photo-7.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 1:</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Design your canvas layout. I use the Silhouette Studio software to do this. I set the page dimensions to whatever size my canvas is. That way all of your words will be in the correct proportions. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJmfuAyOY5gR5fGoijp78uvMpGvjhIuJnZoJ__pHQzZRxy0rJMpZ4-yYb49l5fISgJaHZsZtSyT53PZRoAJm3NFbb0tr0GjX4jmhal_Ds2doACMgaLgI3RJ_CfBs6jqkRtAw5dliDLpMA/s1600/ohio+state.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="177" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJmfuAyOY5gR5fGoijp78uvMpGvjhIuJnZoJ__pHQzZRxy0rJMpZ4-yYb49l5fISgJaHZsZtSyT53PZRoAJm3NFbb0tr0GjX4jmhal_Ds2doACMgaLgI3RJ_CfBs6jqkRtAw5dliDLpMA/s320/ohio+state.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 2:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cut your words. I used contact paper to cut the words on because it is much cheaper than vinyl. I cut the words using my Silhouette. Make sure you adjust your settings when cutting on the contact paper (it is much thinner than vinyl.) I set speed on 7 and thickness on 1. It took a lot of trial and error to discover the correct settings, but these seem to be the magic numbers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tip: Use colored contact paper instead of clear. It is much easier to do this when you can actually see the words. I learned this the hard way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 3:</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Spray paint the canvas whatever color you want the words to be. I'm making an Ohio State canvas, and I want the background to be red with silver letters. So, I painted my canvas silver.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7WW8eEhUxHPLS74u1ugFSyLumXKEJts30l4y67u7_SQPPYjyJ6HHr5fVrC8YJMMHrIjnzM5RFDCDcZpF404YVCC9IxvIQvWnLwx2wGXfImxAQUG7Je8OPGoewDyRnM2Y8Lue_TSHnKUM/s1600/photo-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7WW8eEhUxHPLS74u1ugFSyLumXKEJts30l4y67u7_SQPPYjyJ6HHr5fVrC8YJMMHrIjnzM5RFDCDcZpF404YVCC9IxvIQvWnLwx2wGXfImxAQUG7Je8OPGoewDyRnM2Y8Lue_TSHnKUM/s320/photo-13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 4:</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Measure off your canvas. Figure out exactly where you want each line to be on the canvas and make marks on each side. It is really easy to do this if you set your page dimensions to your canvas size. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu4KVYIMufVQhVcNIGMnu5pjNil3qTKHltg0eWs7HYYiFFDm8p-CwD9r92b80XmfIP8bWO9g7v-VgOk8XRS3zno7ZNvOpIYZrhA3RTuMg1LmQCXv_rzvraKoGYV-8b9ppTyxZKO4_BAhE/s1600/ohiostate2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="177" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu4KVYIMufVQhVcNIGMnu5pjNil3qTKHltg0eWs7HYYiFFDm8p-CwD9r92b80XmfIP8bWO9g7v-VgOk8XRS3zno7ZNvOpIYZrhA3RTuMg1LmQCXv_rzvraKoGYV-8b9ppTyxZKO4_BAhE/s320/ohiostate2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see in the picture, I add a box to find the exact measurements of each line. Make the bottom of the box flush with the bottom of the page and raise the top of the box to the bottom of whatever line you are measuring. Then, however tall the box is, is how far up from the bottom of the canvas you need to measure. (If you aren't OCD about the lines being straight like I am, then you can skip this step).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 5:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Use painter's tape to mark off where you want the first line to be (you should have marks from the previous step). Then, add the words. I use transfer tape, so that I can add the whole line at one time and not have to try to stick each letter on. Repeat until you have all the words stuck on. Be sure to press the letters on good. You don't want them peeling off!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0thn6bNgbSi_ryGsRD427yYYc8WnMm-QjA6L18q01wKmYGdTbcVC5ALeZu_skXcst42SYK4JqtRj5rVK9EP52KTP5LCw1iNcH_mG2kJSFlgpo4rhYuZJZxSMNAkNC7dIzadbteqoAqFw/s1600/photo-12.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0thn6bNgbSi_ryGsRD427yYYc8WnMm-QjA6L18q01wKmYGdTbcVC5ALeZu_skXcst42SYK4JqtRj5rVK9EP52KTP5LCw1iNcH_mG2kJSFlgpo4rhYuZJZxSMNAkNC7dIzadbteqoAqFw/s320/photo-12.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 6:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Spray paint the canvas whatever color you want the background to be. Like I said earlier, I want my background to be red.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtLEv64Vt1Etkduz3JytObsmyz1IZKDxzMX2y6SIwuI7CBpTZaXIDUdG3gS01jXw9roSajqzMmNH3uzEp93rwAqlsYWI6YK7g-brz7v9-7Z8hyMGr8X5CV4G-_699xhDtwmMTbaa4oDss/s1600/photo-4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtLEv64Vt1Etkduz3JytObsmyz1IZKDxzMX2y6SIwuI7CBpTZaXIDUdG3gS01jXw9roSajqzMmNH3uzEp93rwAqlsYWI6YK7g-brz7v9-7Z8hyMGr8X5CV4G-_699xhDtwmMTbaa4oDss/s320/photo-4.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Paint one coat and wait a couple of minutes. Then paint a second coat. Make sure that it looks pretty even, but don't go overboard with the paint. The letters will start peeling off, and they you have a mess.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let dry for at least 10 minutes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 7:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Peel off letters. It's easier if you use tweezers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmMpgT6bawSCqQBvPmE4hnwhPUhBXgktQB7t_w4K1KP8IOJlZBn1HgQecNcxTZexh9nLnencfYuI4kocg67Y8mj6MD5WQBm_6wTQTY7FTRjucxWy8Ah_XCL6KP-pQcbQHGrWDJqoBGWWk/s1600/photo-3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmMpgT6bawSCqQBvPmE4hnwhPUhBXgktQB7t_w4K1KP8IOJlZBn1HgQecNcxTZexh9nLnencfYuI4kocg67Y8mj6MD5WQBm_6wTQTY7FTRjucxWy8Ah_XCL6KP-pQcbQHGrWDJqoBGWWk/s320/photo-3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 8:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Touch up letters. No matter how hard you try, some letters are going to have red paint on them. Just use a paint pen or brush to touch up the letters with the correct color.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 9:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Admire your creation! :)</div>

<br /></div>
I lied…this is another post about football. At least this time it's about subway art. :)<br />
<br />
A few weeks ago I posted the Alabama Fight Song Subway Art I made on Etsy. Someone pinned my sign on Pinterest (thanks by the way to whoever it was), and tons of people started viewing my listing. At first I had just intended on making Alabama and maybe Auburn ones, but everyone wanted one. I had people asking if I could make canvases for Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Ohio State, and Penn State. I'm certainly not complaining about the success of this item, I just wish it didn't take so long to make them. I have been working like crazy trying to get all of these made and shipped. <br />
<br />
There is also another downfall of making these. I now know the words to all of these schools' fight songs. After I made the Auburn one, I walked around the house singing "War Eagle…Fly Down the Field" over and over again. I could not get that dang song out of my head for days (hence the title). Obviously, Alabama's is the best (my vote may be a little biased), but I have to give Auburn credit. Their fight song is MUCH better than a lot of other schools. Notre Dame's is probably the worst I've seen so far. No offense to the Fighting Irish, but "send a volley cheer on high"…what does that even mean? <br />
<br />
Here are some of the signs I've made so far.<br />

<div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
<br />
1. Thou shalt wear team colors. But think twice before adorning yourself with body paint—you don’t want to be the Internet photo that goes viral.</div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
2. Thou shalt know—and sing—your team’s fight song from beginning to end. Sure, you can “watermelon watermelon” your way through the alma mater, but not memorizing the fight song is a fan failure.</div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
3. Thou shalt keep your language clean (unless, of course, the quarterback fumbles on fourth and goal).</div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
4. Thou shalt support the coach. Even when his calls are questionable.</div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
5. Thou shalt be respectful to visiting teams. Remember: Southern ladies and gentlemen never boo.</div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
6. Thou shalt set up a tailgate no fewer than three hours before kickoff (six if it’s a night game). Table linens and matching huggers encouraged, but not required.</div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
7. Thou shalt theme your tailgate food around the visiting rival. Gator bites, anyone?</div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
8. Thou shalt stay through the fourth quarter—rain or shine. That’s what ponchos are for, y’all.</div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
9. Thou shalt respect the solemnity of Game Day by planning weddings, births, and other life events around the football schedule.</div>
<div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">
10. Thou shalt not covet other teams’ bowl games, national championships, or Heisman Trophy wins. There’s always next year.</div>

My favorite time of the year is football season! Roll Tide! <br />
<br />
I received season tickets for graduation, so I will be attending EVERY game this year! My sister and I went to the first game Saturday. Bama was playing Kent State, so it was a pretty chill game. Obviously, we won by a landslide. It was really different sitting in regular seats. I have sat in the student section for the past 4 years and was kind of sad to leave it. But, I must say that I really enjoyed my new seats. I do miss the atmosphere of the student section, but I most certainly do not miss having to get to the game 2 or 3 hours early to get good seats.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It was just a little warm at the game, but we had a blast!</td></tr>

</div><div>I may not love all the teams in the SEC, but there is one thing that Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, and LSU fans can agree on. The SEC is the best conference in NCAA football. Southern Living Magazine posted several articles on their website celebrating football in the south. There are 4 articles that I LOVE, so you can look forward to me sharing those with you for the next few days. </div><div><br />

It goes back to nights in Paul Snow Stadium, where the Fighting Gamecocks of Jacksonville State whipped Troy, or Tennessee-Martin, or Delta State. In my memory we always won, as, in dreams, you never hit bottom when you fall. My uncles, good men, took me there as a boy in the 1970s and bought me hot dogs wrapped in aluminum foil. We always sat up high, so I could see the stadium fill with people I knew: the insurance man, the lady from the Five-and-Dime, and every pretty girl in five counties.</div><div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">The JSU school colors were red and white but might as well have been dark blue, from all the company jackets from U.S. Pipe or Goodyear. If it rained we hid under Caterpillar caps and programs, but not umbrellas. We did not believe in umbrellas. On occasion, one would unfurl in the seats in front of us, and my uncles would grumble that "We'd see some football, if it wasn't for all these parasols." Our heroes were Ralph Brock--he could throw a football from here to Edwardsville--and Boyce Callahan, who ran for his life. He's a chiropractor now. He was like lightning, then.</div><div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">We never looked away at halftime. With a great pounding of drums and sounding of brass, the Marching Southerners, in perfect step, would sweep onto the grass. They played music from our history, and, if you listened close, you might hear a tuba player sing: <em>In the sky the bright stars glittered/ On the bank the pale moon shone/ And twas from Aunt Dinah's quilting party/ I was seeing Nellie home.</em> </div><div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">And the beautiful Marching Ballerinas, in red velvet, kicked their white boots high in the air. Why do we love football? How could we not?</div><div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I teach now in the shade of the great stadium at The University of Alabama, and though my joy of football has hardened in middle age it has not faded. On Sundays, after a rare loss, the air goes stale. It seems harder to move. I have friends who say it is the same in Auburn, Athens, anyplace people live and die on a holding call, and joke that their new state flower is a satellite dish with high definition.</div><div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">My middle stepson, Caleb, is a Tennessee fan, so I have kept him hidden until now. He insists on wearing that awful color, better suited for deer hunting, forcing me to say something mean about Peyton Manning just to see him hop like an agitated, orange squirrel. But he is so despondent after a loss that I pull for UT, sometimes, to spare him pain.</div><div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">When Chris Roberts, an Alabama professor, explains our fascination "to the infidels," he describes his route to work: "Past the Bryant Bank on the left, then over the Bryant Bridge. Eventually, I turn onto Bryant Drive, home of the Bryant Museum and Bryant Conference Center. I park near the northwest end zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Then I walk past the Bryant statue. If they're not convinced, I show my ATM card--the one with Bear Bryant on it."</div><div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I do not know if I would love it as much if I had discovered it at an age of chat rooms, of anonymous bad-mouthing. I learned to love it in an age of newspapers, of fat Sunday sports pages filled with the lore of the game, all but lost in a time when every quarterback's tweet from behind a velvet rope sends ESPN all atremble.</div><div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Would I? Probably. "How could a game be better?" said Alabama fan Ken Fowler, who, for seven decades, has suffered and exulted through Saturday afternoons. "People united in common interest, in the outdoors, against one enemy. And, it reminds us that all in this world is not hurricanes and volcanoes."</div><div style="color: #555555; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I hope your teams, at least in distant memory, always win. Unless they are playing one of mine.</div></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />

We have been under a tornado warning since about 10:00 this morning…ugh. After my brush with a tornado this April (see my earlier <a href="http://heelsandhoneysuckles.blogspot.com/2011/08/i-will-praise-you-in-this-storm.html">post</a> if you don't know what I'm talking about), saying that I'm terrified of tornados is a bit of an understatement. So, I've made my mom, sister, and cat all cram into a tiny closet for the past 2 hours. Needless to say, I am not their favorite person right now…haha! This is definitely not the way I had planned on spending my Labor Day :( Oh well, it's always better to be safe than sorry!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00701137669544774357noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8242683660946964457.post-60346036715297475522011-09-01T15:00:00.000-05:002011-09-01T15:00:52.762-05:00Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes!I finally got a real accounting job! Woo hoo! I will be working at Carr, Riggs & Ingram CPA firm in Enterprise, AL. It is an amazing accounting firm. They have offices all over the Southeast and employ over 600 employees! I am so excited that I get to work there! <br />
<br />
I am a little sad to leave my tutoring job. I know it is just part time, but I really enjoy it. I have gotten to know some of the students and will really miss helping them. But, it is time for me to move on.<br />
<br />
I am most excited that I can finally get my own apartment in Enterprise. My Grandeen, however, thinks that's a waste of money and can just not understand why a 22 year old college graduate who has lived on her own for the past 4 years wouldn't want to live at home with her mother. So, here are just a few of the many reasons that I need to move out!<br />
<br />
<ol><li>Sharing Diet Cokes with others. I need there to be cold Diet Cokes in the fridge at ALL times. That is not always the case now.</li>
<li>Waiting on my sister to get out of the shower. I get up when my alarm goes off, but can't start getting ready because someone is STILL in the shower.</li>
<li>I have no idea where all of my stuff is. My room is too small for all of my belongings, so I have some stuff at my Mom's, some at my Dad's, and some at my grandparent's.</li>
<li>My Mom's cleaning sprees. I leave things strategically placed around the house, so that my room doesn't get too cluttered. Then, Mom goes on these cleaning sprees and it all winds up in a pile on my bed.</li>
<li>Slow internet. I know I complained about Comcast when I lived in Tuscaloosa, but man do I miss the days when it didn't take an hour to load a YouTube video. </li>
</ol><div><div>Believe it or not there are some things that I will miss about living at home.</div><div><ol><li>Raymond. I'm really going to miss the little guy…the cat hair not so much.</li>
<li>No bills. Definitely going to miss that and using Mom's credit card to buy groceries.</li>
<li>Magen's quotes. Bless her heart…she's so blonde and says the funniest things. I'm keeping a list so I may have to blog about them one day (she will probably kill me though). </li>
</ol></div></div><div>Don't get me wrong…I love my mom and sister, we just all get along better when we don't live together haha! I will only be 30 minutes away, so I can visit often (and still eat at Howard's on Thursday nights).</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00701137669544774357noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8242683660946964457.post-3658391446027330072011-08-29T09:11:00.000-05:002011-08-29T09:11:10.317-05:00Wedding BellsMy good friends, Nicole and Chris, got married a couple of weeks ago, and I was lucky enough to get to be a part of their awesome wedding! (Sorry, the post is so late…I was waiting on pictures). <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">The wedding took place Friday August 19 at The Grand on Foster in Dothan, Alabama at 8:00 pm. The venue is absolutely perfect for a wedding! It is so pretty that it doesn't require a lot of decorations (that means you save money)! If you want to get married in South Alabama you should definitely check out <a href="http://thegrandonfoster.com/">The Grand on Foster</a>.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I also have to give a shout out to the photographer, Amanda Griffin Smith of Pratts Photography). Amanda is so sweet and did a fantastic job! The pictures turned out great! I posted a few pictures below, but visit <a href="http://www.prattsphotography.com/Partnering/Nicole-and-Chris-are-Married/18749871_dqpDP3#1450975347_zwP4kGB">Pratts Photography</a> to view the rest.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

I wish you two the best! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I've also received a lot of questions about the difference between the Silhouette and Cricut. So, I decided to answer everyone's questions at once. Keep in mind that I've never actually used a Cricut before. I did a lot of research before purchasing my Silhouette, so I'm just using that information to compare it to a Cricut. <br />
<br />
Let me start by saying that I love my Silhouette! I suppose that it does have a few flaws, so I listed the pros and cons of the Silhouette SD for you below.<br />
<br />
Pros:<br />
<ul><li>No cartridges - Unlike the Cricut, the Silhouette doesn't use cartridges. You can either use any image saved on your computer (including images downloaded from the internet), or you can buy images from the Silhouette Online Store for $0.99.</li>
<li>More control of what you cut - The Silhouette comes with Silhouette Studio software that allows you to design and edit the images you want to cut.</li>
<li>It can cut any font installed on your computer - I think this is the best feature. You NEVER have to buy fonts. There are already a ton of fonts installed on most computers, and you can download free fonts from <a href="http://www.dafont.com/">dafont.com</a>. </li>
<li>Longer cut length - The Cricut can only cut lengths up to 24", but the Silhouette can cut lengths up to 39". </li>
<li>Smaller - The Silhouette is smaller and lighter. It takes up much less space and is very portable.</li>
</ul><div>Cons:</div><div><ul><li>Narrower cut length - The Cricut's maximum cut width is 11.5", and the Silhouette's maximum cut width is 8". This only really matters when it comes to using vinyl. Cricut vinyl is 12" wide, so you either have to cut it to fit or order Silhouette vinyl from <a href="http://expressionsvinyl.com/">expressionsvinyl.com</a>.</li>
<li>More expensive - My Silhouette SD cost around $250 plus shipping. I think the Cricut costs a little less.</li>
</ul><div><br />
</div>As you can see, the pros outweigh the cons (at least in my personal opinion). Actually, the cons list will be even shorter since Silhouette America just released a brand new cutting machine. The Silhouette Cameo is replacing the Silhouette SD, and it is a little bit different. It will cut 12" instead of 8", so you can use Cricut vinyl with it. The one major drawback to the new Silhouette Cameo is the price. It is $299.99 plus shipping. You can no longer buy the Silhouette SD on the <a href="http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/">Silhouette America</a> website. So, if you are looking for a cheaper route, I would suggest <a href="http://www.amazon.com/">Amazon.com</a>. You might find a good deal on a Silhouette SD.<ul></ul></div><div><br />
</div><div>I've also included a tutorial on how to cut an image downloaded from the internet using the Silhouette SD.</div><div><br />
</div><div>1. Find an image you want to cut and save it to your computer.</div><div>2. Open the Silhouette Studio software and open the image.</div><div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivLuT_SitX2O8M-RmvJjQY7-SsFI-iuOD39f3sFyn6xbCKc24FOtvTDTz58VXuk9cqgfFuuPtmLw6c7zBU52lbSSxOP5UIy5afr-S5lrZ3Kp5jO1F_CEM6GvQ2wUtiiPtCDoeVfnTBnJE/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivLuT_SitX2O8M-RmvJjQY7-SsFI-iuOD39f3sFyn6xbCKc24FOtvTDTz58VXuk9cqgfFuuPtmLw6c7zBU52lbSSxOP5UIy5afr-S5lrZ3Kp5jO1F_CEM6GvQ2wUtiiPtCDoeVfnTBnJE/s400/1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div>3. Click on the trace image button. (You have to trace the image so that it will actually cut the image itself and not the edge of the picture.)</div><div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiScKsKx0XH_JxHD-S6jLtkxZOlQUqH64eHXYQRdUqpT3EOe9yv64S9kO-aaNBzUnAvqgmFQBNsIL5qKc2Ym_qERydG2mIAjA1yxCiuar6jxll_VbieJAGoBhTz9QpHOX1SnJMwFQ72ZXE/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiScKsKx0XH_JxHD-S6jLtkxZOlQUqH64eHXYQRdUqpT3EOe9yv64S9kO-aaNBzUnAvqgmFQBNsIL5qKc2Ym_qERydG2mIAjA1yxCiuar6jxll_VbieJAGoBhTz9QpHOX1SnJMwFQ72ZXE/s400/2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">4. Click select trace area, and drag grey area over part of the image you want cut. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">5. Unselect the High Pass Filter check box.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">6. Click Trace.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Not long after I listed my first items, Carolyn from Cookin' for My Captain (that's her blog) messaged me about the water bottles with cheerleaders and football player that I made. She was planning on doing a giveaway when her blog reached 400 followers and asked if I'd be interested in participating. Of course, I said yes! I think it will be a great way to promote my shop!<br />
<br />
Carolyn is super sweet, and today is actually her birthday! Happy Birthday Carolyn! Her blog is pretty awesome, and you should be following it if you aren't already. She cooks these amazing meals and then blogs about them. Her food all looks delicious, but I haven't made any of the recipes yet (that's just because I'm a terrible cook…haha). Like I said, you should definitely check out her blog <a href="http://cookinformycaptain.blogspot.com/">Cookin' for My Captain</a>.<br />
<br />
Back to the giveaway. All you have to do to win is follow the steps that are listed <a href="http://cookinformycaptain.blogspot.com/2011/08/400-followers-2-winners-giveaway.html">here</a> on Cookin' for My Captain. Then, a winners will be selected, and will receive a personalized bottle.<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures of what you can win.<br />

So, I thought that I would share it with you guys! </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> <br />
</span> <br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Before you read this article, you should know that I love being from the south. I know other parts of the country make fun of us because we talk slow, say funny words, and name our children after our mother's maiden name. But, that's just because they don't understand. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">We just do things differently down here, and personally I think we do them better. We eat lunch at my Ninny's house every Sunday after church. (Everything she cooks is good, but my favorite is when she cooks breakfast. There's no competing with her biscuits and fig preserves). I learned to drive my grandeen's truck in a cow pasture. I graduated high school with 69 people who I'd known since kindergarten. We drink sweet tea and say yes ma'm and no sir. It may not sound like a glamourous life, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Now you can read this article. It was written by Allison Glock and featured in the August/September 2011 issue of Garden & Gun Magazine.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: large;">Southern Women</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;">A new generation of women who are redefining the Southern Belle</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times;"> </span></span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"> </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">It is not posturing, or hyperbole, or marketing. (See: all those song lyrics about California girls and their undeniable cuteness.) Southern women, unlike women from Boston or Des Moines or Albuquerque, are leashed to history. For better or worse, we are forever entangled in and infused by a miasma of mercy and cruelty, order and chaos, cornpone and cornball, a potent mix that leaves us wise, morbid, good-humored, God-fearing, outspoken and immutable. Like the Irish, with better teeth.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">To be born a Southern woman is to be made aware of your distinctiveness. And with it, the rules. The expectations. These vary some, but all follow the same basic template, which is, fundamentally, no matter what the circumstance, Southern women make the effort. Which is why even the girls in the trailer parks paint their nails. And why overstressed working moms still bake three dozen homemade cookies for the school fund-raiser. And why you will never see Reese Witherspoon wearing sweatpants. Or Oprah take a nap.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">For my mother, being Southern means handwritten thank-you notes, using a rhino horn’s worth of salt in every recipe, and spending a minimum of twenty minutes a day in front of her makeup mirror so she can examine her beauty in “office,” “outdoor,” and “evening” illumination. It also means never leaving the house with wet hair. Not even in the case of fire. Because wet hair is low-rent. It shows you don’t care, and not caring is not something Southern women do, at least when it comes to our hair.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">This is less about vanity than self-respect, a crucial distinction often lost on non-Southerners. When a Southern woman fusses over her appearance, it does not reflect insecurity, narcissism, or some arrested form of antifeminism that holds back the sisterhood. Southern women are postfeminism. The whole issue is a nonstarter, seeing as Southern women are smart enough to recognize what works—Spanx, Aqua Net—and wise to the allocation of effort. Why pretend the world is something it isn’t? Better to focus on what you can control (drying your hair) and make the best of what you have. Side note: Southern women do not capitalize on their looks to snag men, though that often results. The reason we Southern women take care of ourselves is because, simply, Southern women are caretakers.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">An example: I have lived in the North off and on for fifteen years. In all that time, only once did another woman prepare me a home-cooked meal (and she was from Florida). I recently visited Tennessee for one week and was fed by no fewer than three women, one of whom baked homemade cupcakes in two different flavors because she remembered I loved them.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Southern women are willing to give, be it time, hugs, or advice about that layabout down the road. Southern women listen and we talk and we laugh without apology. We are seldom shocked. Not really. Sex in the City may have been revolutionary for the rest of America, but not for Southern women. Of course we bond and adore each other, and talk about all topics savory and otherwise. That’s what being a woman means.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">In Terms of Endearment, a dying Debra Winger visits a friend in New York and is immediately bewildered by the alternately indifferent and aggressive way the women relate to each other.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">“Why do they act like that?” Winger asks a friend, genuinely confused. Why indeed?</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Southern women see no point in the hard way. Life is hard enough. So we add a little sugar to the sour. Which is not to suggest Southern women are disingenuous cream puffs. Quite the opposite. When you are born into a history as loaded as the South’s, when you carry in your bones the incontrovertible knowledge of man’s violence and limitations, daring to stay sweet is about the most radical thing you can do. </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Southern women are also a proud lot. In any setting, at home or abroad, Southern women declare themselves. Leading with geography is not something that other ladies do. You do not hear “That’s just how we roll in Napa.” Or “Well, you know what they say about us Wyoming girls…” You may hear “I’m from Jersey,” but that’s more of a threat than a howdy.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"> </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">There are other defining attributes, some more quantifiable than others. Southern women know how to bake a funeral casserole and why you should. Southern women know how to make other women feel pretty. Southern women like men and allow them to stay men. Southern women are not afraid to dance. Southern women know you can’t outrun your past, that manners count, and that your mother deserves a phone call every Sunday. Southern women can say more with a cut of their eyes than a whole debate club’s worth of speeches. Southern women know the value of a stiff drink, among other things.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Which brings us to what can only be called: the Baby Thing.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span><br />
</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Southern women love babies. We love them so much we grab their chubby thighs and pretend to eat them alive. This is not the case in the North or the West or the middle bit.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">I grew up, like all Southern girls, babysitting as soon as I was old enough to tie my own shoes. I was raised to understand that taking care of children was as natural and inevitable as sneezing, that when we were infants, somebody looked after us, and thus we should clutch hands and complete the circle without any fuss. I was also taught that your children are not supposed to be your best friends. Southern women do not spend a lick of time worrying about whether or not their kids are mad at them. They are too busy telling them “No” and “Because I said so,” which might explain why there are rarely any Southern kids acting a fool and running wild around the Cracker Barrel.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">I have two daughters, Dixie and Matilda, and when we go down South, they are surrounded with love from the moment we cross the Mason-Dixon. Elderly men tip their hats. Cashiers tell them they are beautiful. To be a girl these days is more fraught than ever. But growing up among Southern women sure makes it easier.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Which is why we are moving back home. I want my children to know they belong to something bigger than themselves. That they are unique, but they are not alone. That there is continuity where they come from. Comfort too. That there are rules worth following and expectations worth trying to meet, even if you fail. If nothing else, I want them to know how to make biscuits. And to not feel bad about eating a whole heaping plate of them.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><br />
</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;">Because before I know it, my girls will be grown. And they will be Southern women too. And that, I believe, will have made all the difference.</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666;"> </span></span><br />
